Sports Venues

There’s no shortage of outdoor activities in the Poconos‚ but baseball fans have a new addition in the area by way of the New York Yankees Triple-A affiliate‚ the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Yankees. The 19-year-old team was previously affiliated with the Philadelphia Phillies‚ and made the switch in December 2006. That meant a name change from the Red Barons to the Yankees and a huge uptick in interest from New Yorkers who live and die for Yankees baseball. Along with baseball, sports enthusiasts can also enjoy hockey with the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins Hockey Team which home location is also on Montage Mountain.

Nascar Fans will enjoy the Pocono Raceway which has long been recognized as one of NASCAR's most competitive raceways. Pocono's unique 2.5 mile track features three turns, each with its own degree of banking. There are two big races per year for which up to 10,000 fans come to view, June's Pocono 500 and in August the Pennsylvania 500. For just over $100, those wishing to experience being a race car driver can sign up for the Stock Car Racing Experience. It offers the thrilling opportunity to drive a Formula 2000 racecar around Pocono's twisting road courses.

Performing Arts

The Pocono Mountains has several performing art venues. The Shawnee Playhouse, Pocono Playhouse and East Stroudsburg University's Abeloff Center for the Performing Arts offer many theatrical productions and the Sherman Theater and Mountain Laurel Center offer a variety of arts, including performance and musical shows. Another option is Penn's Peak, which is a great venue for smaller musical concerts. Larger musical acts can be seen in Wilkes-Barre at the Wachovia Arena.

Festivals

You'll find a variety of festivals throughout the year, each with its own unique combination of entertainment, food and fun. There is the Blues Music Festival, the Irish Celtic Festival, a Lumberjack Festival, Wine Fest, Beer Fest, Blueberry Festival, Garlic Fest... just to name a few.
